The Danish artist Augusta Atla transforms the gallery’s space into a single work, creating a ritual entity. The space remains a ritual or atelier the artist has just left.

“Creating art is my way of existing in the world – my arch or bridge between everyday life and mystery. I have gradually used art to construct my practice as the last refuge in an over-rational world and patriarchal culture.” – Augusta Atla

Atla samples and edits references and motifs by removing elements. Atla refers to her technique as an editing of art history, in which absence and presence are a critical, emotional and potent strategy. She works methodically in a quest for a new, critical look at identity, power and body. The construction of female identity in European art history is a particular point of investigation. Atla questions our understanding of power and gender.
