In his new series of monotypes Mathias Malling Mortensen explores the possibility of achieving depth on the flat surface of the paper through the use of paper cut-outs and colour.
Interestingly, rather than using the paper cut-outs, as Mathias Malling Mortensen would usually do he used the negative space instead of the cut-out shape. Those perforated papers were transformed by the artist into stencils.
With the help of several aquatint plates and colours Mathias Malling Mortensen built his compositions printing more colour plates on top of each other. Each time masking a different area of the plate with the paper stencil Mathias Malling Mortensen would freely combine form, texture and colour.
The result is a series of dynamic compositions characterised by vibrant colours where the overlapping of abstract shapes and bright colours form playful works that are built on the tension between a finished work and an ongoing experimentation.
Although Mathias Malling Mortensen’s monotypes speak for themselves in terms of their quality and strength, this new series of works is still to be explored.
