Under the name Art Bar Extravaganza, Nikolaj Kunsthal is the setting for the opening of Art Matter Festival 2025. The intensive program that kicks off the festival offers an eclectic mix of performance, dance and music - both outside on Nikolaj Plads and inside the galleries of Nikolaj Kunsthal.
Powerful performance about stereotypical representations of women in popular culture
Cassie Augusta Jørgensen is a Danish visual artist, dancer and choreographer who has made a name for herself in recent years with her intense and breathtaking performative works that break with popular culture's stereotypical representations of women. At Art Bar Extravaganza you can experience a new version of her performance The Rite of Nothing, which received great attention and praise at last year's Roskilde Festival.

At Art Bar Extravaganza you can experience a new version of her performance The Rite of Nothing, which received great attention and praise at last year's Roskilde Festival.
The Rite of Nothing is a reinterpretation of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, a ballet where a young virgin is sacrificed to ensure a fertile spring. In this version, three virgins - played by Clara Dessau, Oskar Pawełko and Cassie Augusta Jørgensen - dance a Danse Macabre to percussive music composed by Isa Ryong. The music, with its static movements, supports the themes of masculinity versus femininity, death, sex and love.
The three performers are wearing costumes from Alectra Rothschild, the Danish fashion designer and artist known for her brand Alectra Rothschild / Masculina, which celebrates craftsmanship, femininity and glamor.
Born of chaos, driven by an invincible will to persevere
In connection with the opening of Art Matter Festival, you can also experience Lotte Sigh's performance By the Roots, which is inspired by the exhibition Breaking Darkness, currently on display in Nikolaj Kunsthal's high-ceilinged Lower Gallery. Lotte Sigh is a choreographer and dancer known for her work in contemporary dance. By the Roots is based on the work Don't Worry, It Will Grow on You, an exhibition contribution from the emerging design studio Solitude Studios.

Malleable collaboration with contradictory movements
Infinite Contradictions: The Elastic Test is a performance by the artist collective Apparatus22, where three participants together maneuver a large leather flag around an area.

The flag is heavy, cumbersome and requires full coordination and collaboration to move. Without using words, participants find solutions that control the flag's movements.
