Hirschsprung LATE Tour in Danish in the exhibition ‘My World – the Skagen Painter Viggo Johansen’

Thursday 22 May 2025 at 18 - 19

The Skagen painter Viggo Johansen (1851-1935) was a different kind of Skagen artist. While the other painters in the artist colony gathered on the beach to paint the roaring sea, he turned his back to it and looked at the desolate hinterland. He focused on the backsides, the outskirts, and human-empty landscapes. He also found many of his motifs within the four walls of his home

He also found many of his motifs within the four walls of his home. Here, he painted private images of his closest family, including his wife Martha and their six children, who often appear in the artist's works. During his lifetime, he was even given the nickname "the painter of the home”.
With the exhibition ‘My World – the Skagen Painter Viggo Johansen,’ the Hirschsprung Collection presents an important, yet lesser-known artist for many, who was part of the artist colony in Skagen.
