Dear you - my parent, my friend, my dearest.
Do you see me when I adapt?
Do you see me when I try to fit in?
Do you see me when I long for reflection?
I see you, will you see me? is a journey that explores experiences of alienation and growing up in a white society. It attempts to depict experiences of growing up between multiple cultures, where survival mechanisms are embedded in behavior to conform to white norms and culture. These strategies transfer to the closest relationships, where the longing to be seen and understood can lead to an inner rootlessness that is heavy to bear alone.
We strive to create a space of understanding, where we are encouraged to listen attentively and understand different perspectives and privileges as we approach each other. This is our
contribution to expanding our shared language of how we encounter the world and how it encounters us.
Maya Ndiaye's live performance, combined with Mathias Didias' cinematic testimonials, set the stage for the evening. The video work is based on Maya's narrative, a story of reclaiming the right to define one's own narrative.
I see you, will you see me? is an art experience that explores connection and interconnectedness within the family as well as the difficult emotions that arise when one does not feel seen or understood by their loved ones and society.
Dear you, do you see me when I say, this is me?
*The exhibition is curated by Meleret Melanin in consultation with diversity consultant Jennifer Maria Matos Tonndorff
*Maya Ndiaye has written the text on which the video work is based and which she unfolds with her narrative structure.
